Entry to an essay competition on old village life at Syerston, Notts. Page 5 includes the following;

"There would be a party at the Hall at Christmas, a Choir outing to the seaside in Summer, carol singing at Christmas, and the Mummers round on Plough Monday. All these things are no more."

"A MUMMERS' play written specially for the villages of Elston, Syerston, Sibthorpe and East Stoke by Mr Dennis Essex, a retired school teacher of Village Way, Farndon, was produced by him in All Saints' Church, Elston, on Sunday.

Those taking part were Mr Joe Fielding, headmaster of St Peter's Church of England School, Farndon three members of his staff - Mr Ron Cooper, Mr Ed Hallinan and Mr Chris Ward - and Mr Cooper's wife Audrey and daughter Alison."
