CROPWELL REVIVAL

MEMBERS of Cropwell
Bishop Youth Club are
reviving the tradItional
Plough Monday play, which
used to take place in the
vlllage every year.

They are being coached by
the Owd Oss Mummers, a
Nottingham group who
speclalise in performing folk
plays. They undertook last
year to recreate Plough
Monday in Cropwell Bishop
as it was in ancient times,
and their efforts proved very
popular.

The group did a lot of
research in libraries and
visited elderly residents to
see that they remembered,
With this Information they
pieced together the words of

the play and were able to
make a set of traditional
costumes.

Last year they performed
the play on Plough Monday
and the previous Sunday In
Farmhouses and pubs in the
Cropwell Bishop an Cropwell
Butler area.

Costumes

Now the Old Oss
Mummers would llke local
people to revive the custom
and this is why, through
retired youth leader Mr
Edwin Musgrove, they
persuaded members of the
youth club to produce the
play this year.

The Mummers are provid-
ing scripts and costumes and

present youth leaders Andy
Zadora and Mat Johnson
have helped with rehearsals.

The members involved,
Bill Straw, Colin Evans,
Godfrey Allison, Robert
Hudson, Dean Butler and
Andrew Harra, will perform
the piay on Monday, which is
Plough Monday, in and
around Cropwell Bishop. The
money they collect will go to
the youth club to pay for new
indoor equipment.

Meanwhile the Owd Oss
Mummers arc still
interested in hearing from
anyone who can remember
Plough Monday customs.
Their organiser is Peter
Millington of 6 The Pingle,
Long Eaton.
