REVIVAL OF PLOUGH SUNDAY
There is a growing desire to re- vive old church customs, and one which appeals greatly to church- people to-day is Plough Sunday, which will be celebrated this week-end (11th January). The county service is to be held in Newark Parish Church at 11 a.m. when the Bishop of Southwell will be the preacher, the service being conducted by Canon Clark- son, Vicar of Newark. both of whom have shown a deep person- al interest in the county's special agricultural services. At Blyth this will be the third occasion on which Plough Sunday has been celebrated since its revival, the service being on Sunday evening at 6 o'clock, the ceremony of the Blessing of the Plough being con- ducted by the Rev. H. H. Howell (St. John's, Worksop). At Tick- hill the custom has been observed for a much greater number of yaars, and here also, the service will held 6 o;c1ock. In villages where the ser- vice is to be held, the procedure will probably follow closely that to be seen at Newark, where a team of Young Farmers will bring the plough into church for the Blessing. Civic interest in this annual service will be main- tained by the Mayor of Newark, Coun. T. Howes, who will be a tending the servicc with members of Newark Borough Council and other civic leaders. The Chair- man of the County N.F.U. (Mr. W. R. Bownes), of Gamston, and other prominent N.F.U. leaders, will also attend the service. A warm invitation is given to every- one associated in any way with agriculture to make a special effort to attend their local Plough Sunday service. After all what Engiishman is not interested in and dependent upon agriculture?
