LANGLEY - GUYSERS PLAY
A letter sent by Mr. R. Hodgkinson, of The Farm, 166 Breach Road, Lang1ey, Heanor, Derbys., postnarked 17/1/1972, to Peter T. Millington. N.b. This location is not to be confused with neighbouring Langley Mill.
Dear Mr. Millington, I was very interested in your paragraph in the local paper, for my father, George Hodgkinson, xho died 3 years ago aged 90, often told us of bygone Christmases when he went "Guysering." Apparently a band of them dressed up and performed this play and were admitted to pubs who gave then "Room, Room, brave gallants, give us roon to sport", which was their entrance signal, they also went into private houses, probably not so remunerative.
I remember one was dressed in Lincoln Green as Robin Hood, having borrowed his fathers regalia fron the A. O. of Foresters, another was "St George" "I am St George that noble champion bold who with my trusty sword has won £10,000 in gold" Another character was Belzebub. As the play sent on St George had a sword fight with another character.
I do believe there is a paper-back called "Peace Pie" which gives a lot of information.
Father went to the Board School and I've got some old exercise books of his dated 189O shewing algebra, mensuration & ordinary sums. If you would like sight of them, please let me know and you can certainly have them.
I do hope the foregoing has helped its just bits that have stuck in my memory over the years.
Kind regards Yours sincerely R. Hodgkinson,
