BRINSLEY - GUYSERS PLAY
Written down from its performance at the 'Robin Hood', Brinsley, on the 24/12/1971, by Peter T. Millington.
BEELZEBUB I'm Beelzebub.
SAINT GEORGE I'm Saint George.
DOCTOR I'm the Doctor.
BEELZEBUB Here I come Beelzebub, Over my shoulder I carry a club, Und,r my arm a dripping pan, Don't you think I'm a jolly old man?
SAINT GEORGE I'm Saint George of England bold, Won ten thousand pounds in gold. Money I want, and money I crave, If you don't give me money, I'll sweep you to your grave.
BEELZEBUB You couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding. Draw your sword and defend yourself.
(They fence, and Beelzebub knocks down Saint George with his dripping pan)
BEELZEBUB Doctor!. A doctor! Is theee a doctor in this town?
DOCTOR I'm the only doctor in town, Where is the patient?
BEELZEBUB Down on the floor.
DOCTOR May I ask what happened to him?
BEELZEBUB Well it was like this. We had an arguument, and I hit him on the head with me dripping pan.
DOCTOR There are nineteen devils in this man, And I'll cast twenty of the boggers out.
Here Saint George, drink from this bottle, And let it drip slowly down thy throttle.
(Saint George rises, and the okay is concleded by singing 'We three kings,' and the passing round of hats pans and bags.)
NOTES:- Costumes were as follows.
All the characters had blackened faces.
Beelzebub carried a wooden spatula for a club, and a milk saucepan For a dripping pan, otherwise he wore norma clothes (Denim jacket and jeans.)
Saint George only carried a black rolling pin and wore ordinary clothes (Dark blazer and jeans.)
The Doctor wore a long light coloured raincoat, a cheap straw trilby and dark glasses, and carried a bottle and a womans handbag, in which all donations were emptied.
The area this side covered included the pubs of Brinsley, and the Red Lion at Underwood, and Shepherds Rest at Bagthorpe, transport being courtesy of the Midland General Omnibus Company, and shankses pony.
The participants were all pupils at Mathew Holland Secondary School, Selston. |
