FIVE generations of
Mrs Agnes Smith's
family helped her to
celebrate her 100th
birthday on Sunday
along with staff and
residents of The
Woodlands, Kimberley.

Mrs Smith was born
in Lambert, Scotland
where her father was
an iron founder and
during her childhood
lived in Alloa, Stirling.

Before moving south
of the border in 1920
she married and had
three children. In 1926
she and her husband
William took over
Newthorpe post office
which they ran for 15 .
years.

Her husband, a former
Glasgow fireman,
was founder member
and first chief fire offi-
cer of Eastwood fire
station. He died in
1947 of Injuries
received during the
war.

After the war Mrs
Smith was the first res-
ident of the memorial
cottages on Mansfield
Road, Eastwood. She,
moved 22 years ago to '
live near her daughter
at Highfield Road,
Nuthall. From there
she lived at The
Spinney old peoples

complex and four years
ago moved to The
Woodlands.

She has always been
interested in current
affairs and local politics
and was at one time
treasurer of Ashfield
Conservatives
Association.

In her 70's Agnes
became a globe-trotter
flying to America to

visit family followed by
holidays in Europe.

She cut her birthday
cake and enjoyed a
glass of whisky at her
birthday party where
all her flowers and
cards were on display.
There was a telegram
from the Queen and
greetings from the
House of Commons.

Her daughter, Mrs

Anne Pratt said that
the family appreciated
the love and care
shown to Mrs Smith by
the matron and staff at
Woodlands.

the Mayor and
Mayoress of Broxtowe
while her daughter
Anne holds the telegram
from the Queen.
