Section 1: About 200 articles on folk plays and Plough Monday customs
from Nottinghamshire newspapers found by systematic search through the
following sources by Idwal Jones and Dave Crowther conducted between
1980 and 1982:
a. All December and January issues of the Retford and Gainsborough Times
from 1870 to 1901.
b. All January issues of the Nottinghamshire Guardian from 1880 to 1890.
c. The Local Notes and Queries scrapbooks in the Local Studies Section
in the Nottingham City Library which contain the Local Notes and Queries
columns of the Nottingham Weekly Express from 31st May 1888 to 10th Feb 1922
and the Nottinghamshire Guardian from 5th Jan 1887 to 10th June 1961.
d. The Doubleday Index and the Customs and Folklore boxes in the
Local Studies Section, Nottingham City Library.
e. The local newspaper card indexes in the East Retford, Worksop, Newark,
Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield public libraries.
f. The Mumming and Plough Monday cuttings file in the library of
T.Bailey Forman Ltd.
Section 2: Just over 100 items relating to researches through
Women's Institutes in 1980-81. The secretaries of the 147 branches
of the W.I. in Nottinghamshire were asked to find out if any of their
members or other people in their area knew anything about folk plays
or Plough Monday customs.
Section 3: A few miscellaneous items encountered as a member of the
Owd 'Oss Mummers between 1973 and 1990.
