LOCAL NOTES AND QUERIES: No. 30: "Guisers" or Disguisers [Derbys.]
*Nottinghamshire Guardian,
24th Apr.1914
"The Derbyshire mummers are remembered under the name of 'guisers.' The
fool-plough was, and is yet in the North, attended by the sword-dancers who
accompanied their performance, which is probably a relic of the war dance of our
Saxon ancestors, with stirring songs. These latter, however, seem to have been
less widely popular and enduring than some of the antic rhymes of the mummers."
