WELLINGORE: PLOUGH MONDAY
South Cliff Parish Magazine,
Jan.1893
Magazine for various parishes just to the south of Lincoln. Copy seen
in Lincoln City Library.
"It may not be amiss to explain that the first Monday after the
Epiphany - this year Monday, January the 9th - is the proper date of
the ancient rustic Festival known as Plough Monday.
In olden times the ploughmen, before returning to their regular work
after the Christmas holiday, which ended at the Epiphany, on this day
went about in parties, acting certain quaint little plays and receiving
contributions from the householders of the Parish.
Until within the last few years this ancient custom has survived in
Longoboby Deanery. If any of us take an interest in cherishing even the
last traces of this historic mumming, they should refuse to countenance
the ignorant pretensions of small boys, who even before Christmas, take
upon themselves to act the ploughman's part. Whereas, a visit by young
or old, who on or about the right date come prepared to amuse with an
honest attempt at the traditional performance, would certainly deserve
a favourable reception."
