Text (45 lines) of a Christmas Guysers play from New Houghton, Derbys.,
featuring the characters Saint George, Turkish Knight, Doctor, Belsi Bub and
Spare Man. This was performed in the late 1930s, and the performers were
apparently taught the play at school. This anonymous informant had previously
provided a text when interviewed along with Sam Richards (see separate record

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND DERBYSHIRE FOLK DRAMA RECORDED BY PETER T. MILLINGTON: NEW HOUGHTON Derby Christmas Guysers Play SK 4965
P.T.Millington Collection,
Col. 1971
Brief note as follows:-
"Recorded in 1971 from Sam Richards and others of New Houghton.
Alternative part for Beelzebub from Sam Richards.
In comes I Bellzebub,
In my hand I carry a club,
In my hand a dripping pan,
Don't you think I'm a jolly old man ?
If you don't, I do.
I've a little money box that speaks without a tongue,
A little bit of money will do it no wrong. (laugh)
With a chink, chink, chink,
I'll sup my drink,
and there's nowt like ready money.
Several men in the bar of the Stanton Hotel, especially Tom Jones, said that
there should be about fourteen parts. These were obviously mainly
supernumeraries. One was Devil Doubt, although as yet no words have been
collected, neither have the names of the other characters."

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND DERBYSHIRE FOLK DRAMA RECORDED BY PETER T. MILLINGTON: PLEASLEY Notts SK 5064
P.T.Millington Collection,
Col. 4th Feb.1971
Brief note as follows:-
"Recorded on the 4th February 1971 from an unknown informant at the White Swan,
Pleasley.
The informant remembered plays performed by participants with blackened faces
and costumes and involving Saint George, a Doctor and possibly Beelzebub. He
was familiar with both the terms Plough Bullocks and Guysers. The latter
probably has something to do with the visits of New Houghton Guysers to
Pleasley, and the former to visiting Mansfield Plough Bullocks, but it is also
probable that Pleasley had a play of its own, but which type cannot yet be
said."
